My First Policy FAQ

I have completed a car insurance quote on-line – how do I get covered?
If you wish to take out the cover or find out more about the quote please call us on 0800 037 1221.
Can you explain the different type of cover available?
Comprehensive Cover
Fully Comprehensive car insurance provides additional cover to that offered with Third Party Fire and Theft car insurance. The most important differences are that damage to your car is insured (subject to any excess that may apply), windscreen cover is also automatically included, personal accident cover for your passengers and yourself is included and stereo/audio equipment is covered as well as your personal effects. You can find information about the excesses for younger drivers on comprehensive cover in our frequent questions zone. Your new car may be bought using a credit agreement or loan. In this case you'd be obliged to purchase Fully Comprehensive car insurance.
Third Party Cover
Third Party car insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. It covers loss or damage to other people and property. Third Party car insurance doesn't cover any personal losses you might incur. If your car is not worth much you might want to consider Third Party cover. Fire and Theft cover often makes little difference to your premium. In fact there are not many insurers who offer Third Party only cover so it is essential to check third party fire and theft as well. You may find that TPFT cover is cheaper than TPO cover as there are more providers of TPFT. Get quotes for both levels of cover and find out which is best for you.
What is an Excess?
An excess is the sum of money that you pay out in the event of a claim taking place on your policy. This money needs to be paid to the insurer before they deal with the remaining amount of the claim. There are normally three different types of excess. Compulsory excess is obviously compulsory to the policy. You may volunteer to pay an extra voluntary excess to attempt to bring the premium down. Finally many new driver policies will have an additional young driver excess. We advise you check the total excess payable with any policy purchased.
Will I be insured when driving other cars?
This depends on the individual policy. It is normally only available to over 25's and not normally available to people employed in the motor trade.

If this is something that is important to you then ask an advisor if it can be included in the policy. We would offer a word of caution. Cover to drive other cars is on a third party only basis and insurance companies insist on certain things being in place
Should I insure in my parents name?
Many people try to avoid higher premiums by insuring a car in a parents name and adding a younger driver. Technically this is called "fronting" and it is to be avoided. In the worst case, should you do this, a claim could be called invalid meaning that you would not receive a payout and the younger driver could be convicted of driving without insurance. As a minimum the fine would be severe and 6 points is generally the basic penalty. For young drivers this could potentially mean the loss of their license. A vehicle being used for commuting by a student could be the evidence an insurance company would need to invalidate the policy for fronting. The safest course of action is to insure in the young drivers name. This carries the extra benefit of them being able to accumulate their No Claims Bonus.
Do you offer a discount with a pass plus?
We do not offer a discount for pass plus but it could be a requirement of the policy. Failure to meet any such requirement would result in the cancellation of the cover provided.
What happens if I go to university and am no longer living at home?
The insurance company would need to be made aware if the car is taken away from home. Insurers rate all areas differently and as a result moving from one to another can result in a change in the price. An example being if you live in rural quiet village and part way through your policy you take your car to a city centre post code the insurer will look to increase the price of the insurance as they view their risk has increased. Failure to advise us of any change in circumstance during your policy could invalidate your policy. If you are unsure of the relevance just call us and ask.
Can I pay by Installments?
We can arrange a payment facility via Direct Debit through a third party finance company subject to your age and a deposit payable upfront, to make paying for your insurance as easy as possible. Please call one of our team for details on 0800 037 1221.

Please see our terms and conditions for full details/terms of the loan provided by the finance company.
Do you have any breakdown cover services?
Yes, we have a fantastic breakdown cover available from the RAC. This can be purchased to run along side your car insurance.
I have sold my car, how do I cancel my car insurance policy with you?
To cancel your policy, you will need to return your current Certificate of Insurance together with a declaration in writing (this can be downloaded below). Once we receive it, we will cancel your car insurance cover and give you a proportionate refund on your premium (subject to no claim).

Please note if the policy has a claim notified on it then no refund will be given and this can have implication if you paying for your insurance via direct debit. Please read the cancellation section of our terms and conditions or ask us for further details.
